World Series Of Poker
Back again after many years,
taking it all in and having some beers.
What’s changed over time?
Me, I suppose, since I’d prefer to be drinking wine.
But in all truth, I now prefer the God of Love to everyone and everything else;
To poker chips and cards being dealt on the felt.
I’m a different woman whose life has significantly changed;
No longer a drunkard or lesbian behaving deranged.
I’m here to testify to the Truth to whom life is pointless without;
All else will leave you wanting, without a doubt.
So thank you, Jesus and My Lady, for rescuing me from my past sins,
And taking me on this amazing journey that beats any of the “wins.”
My life is much fuller now with joy and bliss,
so WSOP, you see why I don’t miss any of this!
Farewell, and maybe I’ll see you again;
And although you’re no longer important to me, just so you know, I still plan to win!
Some context to the above poem: I was a professional poker player. That’s right; I played poker for a living. I was at the poker tables at home and away for over ten years. I would frequent Las Vegas to play in prestigious tournaments and was confident I could hold my own on the felt. When I moved to Las Vegas, I initially planned to continue my poker career here. But you know that saying that says, “You want to make God laugh? Tell Him your plans?” Well, it wasn’t long before I knew His patience was running thin on my choices, lifestyle, and “career.” Thankfully, I could discern that things were going so poorly for me, both in poker and in my relationship, because they were sinful; It was time to change. Be alarmed whenever you’re living in sin and not experiencing hardships! That means that you’re already in the clutches of the Enemy. “The Lord disciplines those He loves, as a father corrects a child in whom he delights.” — Prov 3:12
So, my conversion also includes leaving poker behind as a career choice. I now do it more for entertainment. I went to the World Series of Poker yesterday to play an event for the first time in about seven years.
And for those of you who are interested in how I did? I did well and cashed in the tournament; I came in 397th place out of 5,342 entrants for a modest payout. Not bad for a day’s work!
